Free and Pro
The download is the same file either way: there is no separate trial build. Installed and unlicensed, Pluto Photos runs as the free tier: one library of up to 500 photos, with tags, ratings, albums and export. Entering a Pro key in the app unlocks unlimited photos, both editors, and every AI feature. Pro is a one-time $29 purchase, not a subscription.
Before You Install
Check the system requirements if you are unsure whether your computer is fast enough. The short version: a 64-bit computer running Windows 10 or 11, macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon, or a current Linux, with a 4-core processor from 2018 or newer, 8 GB of memory (16 GB is better) and an SSD. A graphics card is not required, but it makes photo descriptions about 8 times faster on Windows. Older and entry-level laptops will run Pluto, but slowly.
The app also downloads its AI model files separately from the installer, once, after installation: about 0.9 GB on macOS and Linux and about 1.6 GB on Windows. That is why the AI tools can be briefly unavailable on a brand-new install while the files arrive in the background. Everything else works immediately.
The supported formats page lists every image, RAW, video and metadata format the app reads, so you can check your camera's files before importing anything.
Coming From Google Photos
If you are moving off a cloud service, install first and read the Google Photos migration guide second: the Google Takeout organizer reads the sidecar JSON files Google exports, so your original capture dates survive the move instead of collapsing to the day you downloaded the archive.
Self-Hosting and the Companion Browser
Pluto Photos can also serve your library to other devices on your own network. This is covered in the companion browser feature documentation.
